Almost all of us have those applications installed on our Mac that take up a lot of space on our precious hard drive, but that we normally do not use. So in the end, every time the system warns us that it is running out of space, it is when we check everything that we have installed and we eliminate useless elements.

In the latest versions of the macOS operating system (Sierra 10.12 onwards) a new tool has been added to the information window of the Mac that allows us to manage the space we have for storage, being able to know, at a glance, which are the apps that take up the most space.

How do I know what those apps are?

We are going to see how you can find out what the storage space on your Mac is being used for, thus being able to know which applications take up the most and, if you don’t use them, delete them and save that extra space.

  1. In the top menu on your Mac, click on the Apple icon. A menu will appear from which you must select the option About This Mac.

2. In the information window about your Mac that will open, select the tab, from the top, Storage. This will show the different storage devices or hard drives that you have installed on your Mac. Click, just to the right of the drive where you install the applications, on the Manage button.

3. A new window will open where, broken down by file types and locations, your file system will be displayed. To find out how much your apps are taking up on your Mac, select the Applications option on the left sidebar. By doing so, the list of applications and their respective sizes will be displayed on the right.

You can sort them by kind, last accessed and size. If there is an app you want to remove, simply select it and just click the bottom right button ‘Delete…’.

In this way, you can manage your Mac’s storage space, being able to know at all times how much the applications you install are taking up and being able, directly from this window, to eliminate those you no longer use.
